40. The Maze Runner – James Dashner
Remember that many of these are boxed sets and that’s why the totals are different.
And now my my favourite new read of the year. It was such s tough decision.. So many of them were excellent, but there were two series that I absolutely devoured in no time flat. The one that really topped it though was……. Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan
This one follows Percy as he discovers his identity as a Demi God and goes on quests to ultimately save Olympus and the Olympians from a prophecy. It was so engaging that, if I remember right, I downed the entire set in a week, a week and a half. I could see right away why so many people love it.
It’s a modern telling. There’s still homework to be done and chores. There’s still disagreements with parents and teachers, bullying, all of those things that kids are going through but with a massive dose of mythology. I’m not sure if it was just my school growing up, but we never had a class about mythology. Not one that I can recall. It’s a topic I wasn’t exposed to very much and I found it fascinating, particularly because it was so relatable.
Also, in a way, very much like Harry Potter in that it’s a separate world do-existing with our own. It gives a little bit of zip to life that way, don’t you think?
Five stars and happy new year everyone!
